Following my long-standing curatorial interest in the practice of women artists, I initiated and curated the first survey exhibition by multi-award winning Canadian artist and filmmaker Marlene Millar spanning 30 years of her creative practice through a selection of 30 works from 1989 to 2019. Included were a newly commissioned multi-screen installation alongside public engagements with Marlene’s works through poetry, creative and critical writing, live dance and choral music. It was held at Threshold artspace, Perth Concert Hall 29 June – 5 October 2019 and extended until 30 November 2019.
Marlene Millar belongs to a long line of women filmmakers including Kira Muratova and Margaret Tait who have been working for decades yet we haven’t done enough to appreciate their work more widely. Marlene’s solo show at Threshold artspace aimed to rectify this art historical oversight and place Marlene’s work firmly in the cannon of filmmaking. Iliyana Nedkova

The survey solo exhibition was accompanied by a series of onsite and off-site events including a sneak preview, a vernissage, an artist’s residency, public talks and masterclasses as part of Screen.dance Festival and Movement touring exhibition, as well as a lunchtime tour of the exhibition and a roundtable discussion at WOW What Now Perth – an integral part of WOW Women of the World Festival.
Live audiences from across Europe and North America were able to see an exclusive screening of Navigation by Marlene Millar – the film which received Screen.dance 2020 International Jury Mention – the first of its six laurels to date – following its world premiere at Scotland’s festival of dance on screen on 20 June 2020. The world premiere of Navigation (2020, trailer) – Marlene Millar’s latest film in the Migration Dance Film Project series took place on 20 June 2020 as part of Scotland’s festival of dance on screen Screen.Dance held in association with Migrant Artists Power Projects (maPs), Paris and Summerhall, Edinburgh.
